Code of Conduct

The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) [Chapter Name] is part of a nationwide community of support, with communications, meetings, and events taking place throughout the United States. Although specific objectives may vary, the overall goal of HLAA outreach is to educate, advocate, and empower people with, and at risk of, hearing loss.

The HLAA [Chapter Name] is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members and guests during meetings, events, and any interactions associated with the chapter. We believe in mutual respect, open communication, and a supportive and safe atmosphere. Opinions expressed by individuals do not necessarily represent those of the HLAA [Chapter Name] or HLAA National.

To ensure the comfort and safety of everyone involved, all members and guests are expected to follow these guidelines during chapter meetings, events, communications, and outreach activities:

  1. Respect for Others: Treat all members and guests with kindness, empathy, and respect, regardless of their background, identity, or beliefs.
  2. Inclusive Language: Avoid words or actions that discriminate against or marginalize individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, or other protected characteristics.
  3. Active Listening: Listen respectfully to others and allow everyone the opportunity to express their thoughts without interruption.
  4. Constructive Communication: Disagreements are natural, but they should be expressed respectfully and without personal attacks.
  5. Confidentiality: Do not share sensitive or personal information about others without their consent.
  6. Compliance with Policies: Follow all applicable chapter and HLAA policies during meetings, events, and communications.
  7. Safety and Well-being: Report any concerns regarding inappropriate behavior, harassment, discrimination, or safety issues to an appropriate chapter leader or designated chapter representative.
  8. Accessibility: Support efforts to ensure that meetings and events are accessible to individuals with hearing loss and other disabilities.
  9. Professionalism: Refrain from disruptive, intimidating, or inappropriate behavior that may detract from the purpose of chapter activities.
  10. Continuous Improvement: Help create a welcoming and supportive environment where all individuals feel valued, respected, and included.

Thank you for your cooperation and for supporting our shared mission of education, advocacy, support, and empowerment for people with hearing loss.
